Asthma Inhalers: What and How

Nearly all asthmatics need an asthma inhaler even though they are taking some type of oral medication. There are many assorted types of inhalers:

1. Aerosol from a canister, also called a metered dose, is in all probability the most favorite type.
2. An inhaler applicator that emits a powder inhaled into the lungs.
3. A nebulizer that emits the asthma medication as a spray.

If utilizing asthma inhalers with the metered dose it is very essential that the correct technique is used.

Proposed Techniques for Metered Dose Asthma Inhalers

a. Shake well. The inhaler needs to be shaken several times before each use.
b. Stay standing with your head up right.
c. Expel air as much as possible until you have no more air in your lungs then introduce the asthma inhalers mouthpiece sealing it with your lips.
d. Following sealing the mouthpiece begin to breathe in and at the same time press down 1 time and only 1 time on the canister to discharge 1 dose.
e. Take the device out of your mouth and proceed to try and breathe by way of your open mouth for 4 to 5 seconds till your lungs are full.
f. When your lungs are full of air hold your breath for at least 10 seconds.
g. Expel the air.
h. If after step g you still are not breathing correctly repeat steps a-g.

Improper asthma inhaler techniques can mean poor transfer of your medication to the lungs. This probably will happen if your distribution is slow when breathing in and pressing one time on the canister, a puff released half way through the process might be lost.

Spacers

A spacer is a breathing apparatus that has a chamber that gets the aerosol prior to being inhaled. These spacers serve 2 purposes for in asthma inhalers:

1. To correct the difficulties in timing of the actual inhalation and the propulsion of the canister. 2. To decrease the speed at which the aerosol contacts the back of the throat.

Keep in mind that spacers are not infallible, there is still some timing needed on the part of the individual. If the asthma inhaler is activated on the expending of the breath in place of the inhalation then you will have lost half of your medication.
